RULE 32: Anticipate Threats

Threats come at us from every quarter, every day—redundancy, downsizing, takeovers, vindictive colleagues, irascible bosses, new technology, new systems, new procedures. In fact, entire books are devoted to threats—mostly from change— such as Who Moved My Cheese? and How to Handle Tough Situations at Work. If we can think on our feet, stay out of ruts, be flexible and move fast, roll with the punches, and go the distance, we will not only survive change but we shall also be contortionists and athletes of the highest order. Of course, we can’t do all that. There will be times when the threat will overtake us and we get squashed. It happens to us all. There is no getting away from the fact that life gets fired at us at point blank range, and we rarely if ever get time to duck.

But a threat is always that. Once it becomes a reality, we can deal with it. While it is still a threat, it induces fear but can do no harm. Spotting which threat will turn into a reality is the skill. The talent. There are many threats, and we can’t react to all of them.

There are fewer realities, and we have to react to them. It helps if we don’t see threats as threats, but instead as opportunities. Each threat that becomes a reality is an opportunity to grow and change, adapt and rework our methods and style of management. If our attitude is positive, we tend to see threats less as a negative thing and more as a positive thing— they bring us the chance to prove ourselves. If we never get challenged, we will never improve.

I was once employed as a manager by a company that was taken over. The new bosses brought in their own managers, and three of us were “downgraded”—demoted in other words. We had no choice—apart from walking out, of course. I was, by this time, a committed Rules Player, so I saw it as an opportunity to prove to the new bosses that I was good enough to be one of their managers and, three months later, I was back up there.

Of the other two, one eventually walked and one stayed “downgraded.” They both bitched and moaned and felt the move was derogatory and demeaning and an insult. It probably was, but I didn’t need to feel depressed about it. I needed to get back up there—upward and onward.

EACH THREAT THAT BECOMES A REALITY IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GROW & CHANGE

Thereafter, once the TPG meeting is over - both Samuel & Mr. Horton's Secretary who have over heard on the price comparison thingy and I also got shared with them, the both of them clap their hands wor...ini macam sudah pakat punya gaya...I don't feel the sincerity there...more like mocking me...I don't know...anyway or anyhow, they will never acknowledge me, now with Miss Chew further penetrating in, lagi lah I will be ignored, bypassed by them...

Hmm, still trying to figure out on the below email...hmm...Peggy & her team? That guy from the BBW Team? Someone from the HBA Team? Hmm...

Prior to that...maybe a few months back...Peggy got mention that Lady Shum (who wrote the email to The Mayor) did commented that Lady Shum felt that Malaysia TP; J___ is very supportive...

On that conversation, and before I went for the TPG meeting, earlier on; in the S&M meeting - this Mr. Horton's Secretary went and do a comparison of an item; Press Ad vs Leaflet...not a fair comparison but Mr. Horton's Secretary point of argument is that the customer will not know, would not be bother to know, Mr Horton's Secretary intention is to flag out that our merchants are not giving a sincere price, they are very income driven...and additionally, according to Peggy, we also do not have the right framework on what to compare, and if we do compare, do we follow the price or must be cheaper?

And with that, in the TPG - Lady Shum also tanya the same thing because already pre-empted by Peggy earlier mah; which I think also no need lah in the first place, all of the sudden, awake the giants who were sleeping...hahaha...but thank God, I copy & paste (which I am very good at; duh) Peggy's answer lor...hahaha...

BCB International

Mr. Horton's Secretary is in charge of emailing out to everyone on the Competitor Press Ad & Catalogue on a daily basis. So, there is this one time...a couple of weeks back, that The Mayor terus email personally to Mr. Horton's Secretary, I am not in the cc loop at all.

On one side, its good - because no need for everything to find me, I also feel a bit burden at times, and on another side, I pula feel a bit green with envy, plus full of insecurity because I don't want to be ter-tinggal & ter-overlooked lor...but I also don't want to be seen to be hogging all of the limelight, we are in a team mah...aiyo, I am indeed a very problem child...hahaha...

Harbor Side

The below email came in this morning...totally a surprise, a pleasant one though.

I would like to thank & honor God for...everything...I wonder who God put in the middle of their discussion that day, who was the magnifier & multiplier? I am sure God have use that person / persons for my good. Indeed, when I know that I have enemies; not enemies that want to kill me but who are insecure or envy about me, just as I of them...God have turn those...weapons; into something good, their bad intentions did not prevail...

Unfortunately again, Miss Chew was not in the cc loop, so Miss Chew missed the grand show...yes, I must be humble, stop being naughty.

I am sure Miss Y-C is now yang pula feeling down & insecure.

And indeed it is true, when other people think that you are a good idea, your boss also have to think that you are also a good idea too.

The Mayor did replied back...siding & favoring Miss Y-C of course. It's ok, it's good that they have the workshop coming.

Royal Corps of Signals

We touched upon this in the trade planning mtg on tues.

As a followup of mon’s store council, jenny’s team and nonfood commercial team met on tues am to discuss how we can improve on the allocations, esp on those short term offers or adhoc promotions.

One takeaway was to run by you to have someone from trade planning in spore to  follow the routine cadence that have has been set by J___ l__.  In Malaysia they face minimal issues in getting things on track among stores (including those quite tactical short term or ad hoc promotions), supply chain planning and commercial, the communication appears seamless and understood by all without  much conflicts.  We did qualify to say that msia has a few years headstart with commercial getting into early planning and submission of promotions 4 to 6 weeks ahead, which we know is something that underpins the “quality” of the trade plan process and as you know, we are committed to deliver this aspect.  Having said that, there will  still be merits in finding out the work/model/process that J___ does and asks that she replicates or buddy up her counterpart so that we too can benefit from her good work.

This feedback from the team is given without prejudice to anyone.

We did talk abt a virtual workshop, maybe we can have J___ share what she has been doing?

THANK YOU GOD, PRAISE TO THE LORD, BLESS YOU GOD! Honor & Glory to God!

RULE 31: Identify Key Times & Event

A cobra has a lot of power, a lot of venom, a lot of energy. But how often do you see one strike? Rarely. Cobras only use all that power and energy when it is

• Appropriate

• Meaningful

• Advantageous

• Beneficial

• Necessary

• Important

They strike when in danger or when they need to feed. The rest of the time you wouldn’t know they were there. The rest of the time they don’t even look like cobras. They don’t display their hood except when they have to. You will become a cobra. There is no point using all your energy and power when it ain’t necessary. What you have to do is identify the key times and events—then you strike.

A cobra’s key times and events are fairly simple to identify— threat and hunger. But what are yours? Much more difficult.

There’s not a lot of point burning all that midnight oil to produce a report that only a couple of your colleagues get to see and is then forgotten. Wait until it’s the big report that’s going straight to the desk of the president—that’s the one that needs the cobra’s striking force.

Of course, a lot of people wait for the key time—the office party, the key exhibition—and then they completely and utterly screw it up. They get drunk or fluff their lines, they are late or sick, or they appear with their flies undone or their skirts tucked into the back of their underwear.

And key events? The presentation is a good one. Get it right and it’s remembered. Get it wrong and it’s you that is forgotten.

You don’t get it wrong. Identify these times and events and shine at them. Be a cobra and strike when it is appropriate.

THERE IS NO POINT USING ALL YOUR ENERGY AND POWER WHEN IT AIN'T NECESSARY.

THANK YOU GOD, PRAISE TO THE LORD, BLESS YOU GOD!

Received a WatsApp message from Stewart...Stewart did not openly ask me whether I want to re-join Stewart or not...just asking me how is my job doing and whether I got consider in joining back merchandising or not...hahaha...I did not gave Stewart a direct answer but I have brought her jalan around the bushes...

Well, Maluri is very very far...right now the distance between my house and G13 is only 7KM apart...furthermore, I don't have to work in the store...if the pandemic does recover, I can also work from home; approve by The Mayor...and I am earning...RM10,476 Gross Income...so yes...I may be feeling sien at my work, struggling because I don't know much, there is no one to guide me nor teach me, Miss Chew and I may not be at the best partnership stage right now, but the both of us are carefully maneuvering each other's way...hahaha...plus I do feel insecure at times being around Samuel & Mr. Horton's Secretary, I do feel small & inferior when going toe to toe with the other cross-functional team; especially The Commercial Division...

Nonetheless, I just want to thank God so much that Stewart remembers me, appreciate my capabilities & competencies...I think others would have seen right through me...I am just a fake...

No Impossible Obstacles

Now Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

When we face problems that seem impossible to conquer, fears and insecurities can cause doubts. The assurance of God's unchanging might, goodness and faithfulness creates a strong harness of trust. This confident assurance fueled the courage of the Old Testament saints, who demonstrated that faith trumps our need to know every detail of God's plan.

With conviction, we seek God earnestly, often standing alone when we trust Him. We can adjust the way we approach our challenges by viewing our circumstances with an eternal perspective - knowing our trials are only temporary.

Focusing on the steep climbs in life can prevent us from believing that God will bring us through. But knowing He's with us, we can harness our uncertainties by faith as we trust God to help us overcome obstacles that once seemed impossible.

An Open, Generous Heart

We don't merely perform a benevolent act here or there, but rather live out a cheerful spirit of giving.

Big-heartedness is our normal way of life.

Be generous and willing to share.

As we live an open, generous heart, we don't need to fear running out of what we need. Rather, the Bible tells us that in our compassionate generosity, we're taking hold of true life.

With God, genuine living means loosening our grip on what we have and giving others freely.

Facing The Battle

Look to the Lord and His strength. Seek His face.

That's not bad advise to follow when illness, family concerns and other battles confront us, because we haven't been left to fight in our own waning energies.

God is present; God is strong; He's looked after us in the past and will do so again. Our God will get us through.

Wonder-working God, I hand over this battle to You.

I trust in Your strength & Your promises.
